Tadpole #2: Rob Magill & Outside Help (Nate Waters)

Saturday, March 7, 2020

8:00PM

Bringing together two creative musical minds, this concert presents two solo sets bound to delight and surprise.  Two multi-instrumentalists, two musicians who freely roam between genre and project boundaries, two artists who are vital members of their respective arts communities.  Nate Waters, seen previously at Theatre 1308 for the Jazz@1308 November concert, is a familiar face across the city's musical landscape, thanks to his involvement in a wide swath of Calgary's music world.  Rob Magill, coming from Southern California, will be making his Calgary debut, bringing his beautiful and vast experience in sound making to the intimate space at Theatre 1308.

Outside Help is the solo project of Calgary-based saxophonist Nate Waters. This new endeavour aims to integrate three oppositional concepts: unbridled free jazz saxophone, overwrought top 40 hip-hop pastiche, and the inadvertent rhythmic nature of human speech and found sound. Nate has led straight-ahead jazz groups and released a record under his own name, but has also been involved with numerous contemporary classical acts (Friesen/Waters Duo, Nobody Say Anything, Bug Incision Players) and independent pop groups (Samantha Savage Smith, The Cable-knits, Hunter-Gatherer).
